In the second gathering of the Sawyer Seminar Series, Davarian Baldwin examines academic freedom and the future of the American university within the context of the neoliberal university. How can the university continue to stand for the principles of academic freedom that rest on the production of knowledge for the public good?

Davarian Baldwin is the Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of American Studies and founding director of the Smart Cities Research Lab and at Trinity College-Hartford and author of In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower: How Universities Are Plundering Our Cities.

About the series

Convened by the WashU Department of African and African American Studies and the Center for the Humanities, this Sawyer Seminar explores how Black studies can sustain academic freedom and help reimagine democratic higher education. Through a yearlong series of conversations featuring leading scholars and public intellectuals, the seminar brings together faculty, students and community partners to examine how Black studies offers vital perspectives on power, inequality and democracy while shaping the future of higher education.
